THE PACKARD-HENNEY ALLIANCE
Starting in 1927, Packard established an exclusive partnership with the Henney Motor Company to produce all official Packard-based ambulances, hearses, flower cars, and limousines. By 1947—the final year of the celebrated 21st Series Clipper-era design—these specialized vehicles represented the ultimate in heavy-duty commercial craftsmanship and dignified style.
Unlike standard passenger models, Henney coaches were constructed on Packard’s purpose-built chassis, which featured a wheelbase 148 inches or longer, heavy-duty frame rails, oversized hydraulic drum brakes, and heavy-capacity rear axles. Beneath the massive hood sat Packard’s top-spec 356 cubic-inch nine-main-bearing straight-eight engine, ensuring smooth, effortless power delivery required for heavy professional coachwork.
Henney vehicles were handcrafted in limited numbers for municipalities, private funeral homes, and medical services, making surviving 1947 Henney-Packards extremely rare additions to the collector world today.
