THE PACKARD TWELVE: THE PINNACLE OF PRE-WAR LUXURY
Introduced during the dark days of the Great Depression, the Packard Twin Six—later renamed the Twelve—served as the definitive flagship of American multi-cylinder motoring. By 1938, the Fourteenth to Sixteenth Series Twelves represented the absolute pinnacle of refined power, whisper-quiet operation, and effortless high-speed touring capability.
Under the long, sculpted hood sits Packard’s legendary 473 cubic-inch L-head V-12 engine, delivering a smooth 175 horsepower with immense low-end torque. The 1938 Model 1607 rode on a 134-inch wheelbase chassis equipped with independent front suspension, vacuum-assisted hydraulic brakes, and clutch.
As the late 1930s approached, the market for massive multi-cylinder automobiles waned dramatically. 1938 marked the second to last year for the mighty V-12, with total production reaching just 566 chassis across all body styles. Among these, the sporty and desirable Model 1607 Coupe Roadster was built in vanishingly small numbers—historians estimate that roughly 12 examples still exist, making surviving cars among the most coveted pre-War Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) Full Classics in existence.
THIS EXAMPLE: PROVENANCE & CONDITION
Offered here by premier marque specialist Parker’s Packards, this 1938 Model 1607 Coupe Roadster is an exceptional representative of Packard’s golden age.
Finished in deep, lustrous Indian Maroon, the bodylines are accented by gleaming brightwork, dual side-mounted spare tires with matching metal covers, dual driving lights, and wide whitewall tires. The folding tan Haartz cloth top provides a visual contrast, lowering neatly behind the cockpit for effortless open-air motoring. Inside, the cabin features rich tan leather upholstery, complemented by faux-wood dash panels, correct factory instrumentation, and a floor shifter.
Following its comprehensive frame-off restoration—of which less than 500 total miles have elapsed—the car was entrusted to Parker’s Packards for complete mechanical sorting and commissioning. The engine received a full tune-up, all fluids were flushed and renewed, the hydraulic braking system was fully adjusted, and a tasteful overdrive transmission was installed. Wide white wall radial tires were added to make this the ultimate tour car.
